NP boys win 10th district title in a row

They won five events, made two All-American Times, seven All-American Consideration Times, five Junior National Times, and set several records at the 1998 district championships

NP girls qualify all relays and three individuals for states

Steve Bohner wins district diving with record score!

Coming back from his injury, Steve Bohner broke an 18 year-old meet record with a new high of 570.95, and won the District I. Championship convincingly. Ryan Hollenbach scored 278.85 and placed 13th; Joel Nelson did 163.60 and finished 18th. Dan Bishop was right behind him with a score of 160.85. He placed 19th. In the girls competition, freshman Lauren Dorn just missed the cut for the top 12, while Kristen Zeblium finished 16th.

NP boys dominate the League Championship
by setting ten (six pool and four league) records

Dominick Szabo broke two pool records (200 IM & 100 Breast) and was part of two pool and league record breaking relays; Steve Fleming broke the 100 Back league and pool records and swam for the same ralays; Jeremy Bergman rewrote the 100 Free league record and was a member of the record breaking 200 and 400 Freestyle relays. Other members of the victorious record breaking relays were Chris Craig (200 Medley and 400 Free), Mike McPeak (200 Medley and 200 Free), and Tim Kronstain and Steve Pasquale (both 200 Free Relay).

167 consecutive wins : North Penn boys own the longest winning streak in Pennsylvania

The 1997-98 season ended the streaks of two other PA power houses. In January, the North Allegheny girls lost to Bethel Park after 111, and Erie McDowell's boys to Hampton after 67 consecutive wins.

Records fall as the North Penn boys beat Souderton 125 - 61

The following team and individual records were broken: 200 Medley Relay (Fleming/Szabo/Craig/McPeak 1:38.88), pool and league dual meet record; Jeremy Bergman, 100 Free (48.38), league dual meet record and ties pool record; Dominick Szabo, 100 Breast (59.41), sophomore class record and league dual meet record. Bob Molettiere of Souderton, 50 Free (21.50) and the 100 Back (52.01), both pool records. Although no records were broken, the North Penn girls posted a decisive win, too (115 - 71).

Steve Bohner injured in a car accident

Thanks to his seat belt and his properly functioning air bag, he escaped serious injury. Steve suffered bruises only, and he should be fine for districts and states.

NP swimmers made a junior national cut, broke many records, and posted good times at the Suburban Acquatic League Championships.

Dominick Szabo
made the junior national cut in the 100 breaststroke by more than a second, and broke two meet records (breast: 58.40 and IM: 1:58.38). Other records were broken by Jeremy Bergman (100 free 47.81, and 200 free: 1:45.87), Steve Fleming (100 back: 53.68)) and the 200 Medley Relay (Fleming/Szabo/Craig/Bergman: 1:38.69). Stephen Pasquale had strong swims with personal bests in the 50 free (22.58) and the 100 free (50.80).

the North Penn Boys are

Fifth in the nation!

The North Penn High School Boys Swim Team finished 5th in the country in the 1996-97 season in a nationwide evaluation of public high schools based on power points. The system has been developed to compare the strength and depth of high schools on a national level. In a listing that includes data from both public and private schools with swimming programs, North Penn is ranked 12th in the United States. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, there were 219,409 student athletes participating in high school swimming and diving during the 1996-1997 school year. These students represent over 5,500 high schools throughout the United States.

The article has quotes from Coach Bartle, discusses past rivalries between the brothers, mentions Dominick's high school performance, and his last year's
No. 1 YMCA standing in the nation in the 14&U 100 breaststroke.

Boys keep dual meet winning streak alive against Emmaus!

According to program founder and first NP swimming coach Rick Carroll, Dominick's time of 59.69, is the first sub-minute in season breaststroke time in North Penn's history. Steve Fleming broke his own backstroke class record, Steve Bohner (diving), Chris Craig (500 free) and the medley relay (Fleming, Szabo, Craig, McPeak) set pool records. Jeremy Bergman won the 100 free with an impressive personal best performance, and many others swam a lifetime best during the closest dual meet this season. Both the boys and girls made several district qualifying times.

North Penn wins both the boys and girls competition at Wilson Relays

The North Penn boys broke two records, one of them by more then three seconds, and won ahead of Wilson and Parkland. The girls edged the same two teams for the first place. Click boys and/or girls for the top three finishers in each event.

Although swimming not in their strongest events, some swimmers still made district qualifying times. They are: Alissa Moser, (500 Free), Becky Naudasher, (100 Breast); Nicole Seward (200 Free); and Dominick Szabo (100 Free). Check out the score board for both boys and girls.

is The Reporter's athlete of the week

The December 25 issue of The Reporter featured North Penn's Chris Craig in its Athlete of the Week section. The article points out that his hard and dedicated training habits have helped him to excel. Craig is looking to compete at the state championships in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.

NP boys and girls sweep Upper Dublin
Dominick Szabo returns with a lifetime best split in the medley relay after missing six weeks with a back injury

The NP boys and girls easily won over their long time rival 133 - 53 and 127 - 59 respectively. Dominick Szabo, who missed six weeks with a fracture in his lower back, was allowed to return to practice on the 19th of December. He swam the breaststroke leg of the medley relay against Upper Dublin swimming a lifetime best split. Jeremy Bergman swam season's best in the 50 yard freestyle. Boys results: 131 - 55; Girls: 112 - 74
Some of the better times: Nicole Seward did a 1:03.44, Katie O'Brien a 1:03.89, and Fleming a 56.81 in the fly; Schillow swam 57.42 in the backstroke; and Craig did a 1:47.62 in the 200 freestyle. Check meet results for all individual times.

Our swimmers achieved some of the best times in the season so far, and came off with a number of 1st and 2nd places.
In boys action Steve Bohner won the diving, Chris Craig the 500 freestyle event. Steve Fleming had two lifetime best performances in the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke, Jim Glancy similarly improved in the 100 butterfly, while Jeremy Bergman came within two hundredth of a second of his best tapered time in the 100 freestyle and made season's best in the 200 freestyle. In the girls' competition Becky Naudasher, Alissa Moser, Ashley Jernigan, Katie O'Brien and the 200 Medley Relay won first places for the Maidens.

Alissa Moser

The December 18 edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer introduces North Penn senior girl swimmer Alissa Moser a two time district champion (100 Back and 200 Free). She is the daughter of Bill Moser, a two time district (100 Breast and 200 Medley Relay) and a one-time state champion (400 Free Relay) for North Penn in 1974 and 1975 respectively.

Boys get part time assistant

Three-time state champion and All-American relay team member Eric Umlauf is now helping boys' head coach William Bartle on a part time basis.

The story talks about his past achievements, mistakes, and future goals, and is complete with quotes from his coach Myrl Zawoiski and his team mate and good friend Dan Bishop.

Girls assistant coach

Don Walsh, former NP pool record holder in the 100 yard backstroke, PIAA silver medalist and All-American with Ago Szabo, Joel Gilbert and Andrew Serang in the 200 medley relay, is now assisting girls head coach Denise Geunes.


Several members of the 1996-97 North Penn swim team and water polo team were selected All-American by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America. For information on who were selected and how they placed, look up the swimming honor and water polo honor departments.

Three swimmers quit, one hurt

Bill Baldwin, Chris McKelvy,
and Matt Mizialko quit the North Penn boys swim team early this season. Only McKelvy will stay in touch with the sport as manager for the girls swim team. Derek Meyerson fell on ice and suffered cuts and bruises, which kept him out of the water for over two weeks.

NP Girls 2nd,

Pennsylvania Water Polo State Championships

Although in the closest title game ever, once again, the Cumberland Valley girls beat North Penn in the finals of the Pennsylvania State Championship. In boys action, Governor Mifflin beat Wilson for the title, and North Penn won over arch rival Wissahickon for a third place finish.
